Peter Wolf’s – A Cure For Loneliness Review

Joe Greene PhotographerA Cure for Loneliness’ will take the listener on a pleasant voyage thru a wide spectrum of our roots in music. There is country, blues, swing, 50’s with a sprinkle of Rock ‘n’ Roll and even an interesting cover of ‘Love Stinks’ bluegrass style. This is Peter Wolf’s eighth studio album and it shows his mastery of most musical styles.

The album includes nine Wolf originals, my favorite being ‘How Do You Know’ which is a boogie number with some very cool Instrumentation. The album starts with ‘Rolling On’ which is an easy listening number driven by some beautiful piano and vocals. Then the song ‘It Was Always So Easy’ takes you on a country adventure and story with some nice guitar and harmonica. Now it’s time to relax with ‘Peace of Mind’ and ‘Fun for Awhile’ both are very soothing songs with nice vocals and smooth instrumentation. In the middle of the Album is the song “Wastin’ Time” with some Heavy guitar and Hammond b3 organ. Followed by a beautiful Acoustic Guitar finger picking intro with the song ‘Some Other Time, Some Other Place’. There is plenty of great guitar and harmonica throughout this song. And now for a little bit of soul when the song “It’s Raining” hits your ears, which Wolf co-wrote with R&B innovator Don Covay.  This brings us to the Appellation Hills version of ‘Love Stinks’ which surprised me; very nice bluegrass version and some nice guitar work. We have covered so much of American Music’s genres up to this point, let’s not stop. How about some Swing! Well the song ‘Mr. Mistake’ should feel that void in your life. And if that doesn’t do it there is the haunting 50’s ballad ‘Tragedy’ and ending the album with another country song ‘Stranger’.

Band: The album was recorded with a prestigious group of musicians that includes several longtime collaborators such as, keyboardist Kenny White, who co-produced the album with Wolf, and the members of his touring band, the Midnight Travelers: guitarists Duke Levine and Kevin Barry, bassist Marty Ballou, drummers Tom Arey and Shawn Pelton.
