Rich Singley

Rich Singley is a local San Diego radio jock that found out how big his heart was earlier this year.  The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society approached the radio magazine host on 107.9 FM KRLY calling on him to be their ‘Man of the Year’ and raise $50,000 for research and development of a cure, right here in the San Diego area.  Rich found himself at a crossroads in his life where this opportunity fit perfectly to jaunt him into the man he wanted to be.  He began on an eight week journey into his own psyche that showed him, not only how big his own heart could be, but how many others were just like him…closet ‘nice people’ who just needed a push.

The finale of this 8 week challenge was an all and out 70’s themed party dubbed ‘Rich Singley’s 70’s Party” featuring a mock updated version of “The Gong Show” with celebrity judges and a  Steve Miller Tribute band “Spaced Cowboys.”  Local Blues Goddess Lacy Younger was on stage as one of the celebrity judges and had a brief opportunity to speak with her at the even.  Lacy and Rich know each other well from his radio magazine on the local music scene, and she was more than happy to help him in reaching his goal for the LLS of San Diego.

The Steve Miller tribute band, whose name has wasn’t quite nailed dawn [SEE VIDEO] was comprised of a local group who normally tour by the name ‘Daring Greatly.’  These guys are pretty much all family and have some of the best harmonies I’ve seen live; however, the origin of this band and where their name came from show you how much heart they have in the game and why Rich fell in love with, not only their sound, but their style and energy.  The star of the night went to Greg Douglass, former Steve Miller lead guitar and hall-of-fame musician, who sat in with ‘Daring Greatly’ to give the night a true 70’s Steve Miller feel!  Greg himself has a story to tell regarding recovery and moving forward, which makes his alignment with ‘Daring Greatly’ and Rich Singley for this fundraising event even that much better.

Speaking to Rich after the event was completed and the time-period set by the LLS was expired, he disclosed to us that he not only reached his goal, but very graciously noted that they exceeded what they set out to get.  Unfortunately, no amount was disclosed; however, the rosiness of Rich’s cheeks when he smiled ear-to-ear to tell me told me how proud he was of his success and with due right my friend.  Congratulations on being the Man of the Year!
