An Evening at “The Casa” with Slim Man and Chase Huna

Slim Man

Owned by Michele & Andy Melnyk, Casa De La Costa, is a privately owned estate within Carlsbad, CA. What began as a small project, swiftly developed into a ravishing music venue that supports independent musicians through providing them with a place to showcase their talent for audiences of 150 individuals.

The Melnyks’ joy resides in hosting up-and-coming musicians, in the hopes of furthering them in their careers. For them, satisfaction can be found in knowing that they have helped artists, and created a space said artists wish to return to. While their following has persevered, the Covid-19 pandemic postponed the shows until further notice. But as of quite recently, the Melnyks have considered starting back up again.

Chase Huna

Slim Man, a multi-talented jazz vocalist, is credited for planting the seed that blossomed the Casa. As a good friend of the Melnyks, Slim Man commonly housesat to watch the dogs whenever they were away. It was during one of these instances, when Slim Man called. He had over a few of his fellow musicians, and commented on how amazing the house’s acoustics were. When he asked why they didn’t hold shows there, the Melnyks did not know. Two years later, they held their first show with Taylor John Williams.

Williams, who is now friends with the Melnyks, is commonly known for his appearance on The Voice. Michele spoke to Andy about how much she enjoyed William’s voice, and expressed how she wished to reach out to him, to see if he would like to play. Williams agreed. Soon after, the Melnyks finally decided to make their home a music venue, by obtaining their license, and holding their very first successful show.

Surveys are conducted following every performance, in which audience members can recommend any improvements, while also sharing what they enjoyed most about the experience. Positive reviews are a guarantee from clients. But Williams was only the first of a multitude of musicians to perform at the Casa. Across two years, Amelia Hammer Harris, Cindy Alexander, Greg Douglass, Jessy J., Mike Love, Paul Cannon, Paul Trudeau, Ron Artis II, Sister Speak, Tolan Shaw, Chase Huna, and Slim Man, would play.

Just last Christmas, Huna, an established saxophonist originally from Palm Springs, and Slim Man, both played as The Rat Pack Duo at the Casa. Behind a crackling fireplace, and submerged in the comforting light of the cozy home, they played well into the night before a happy audience. Their history of playing alongside each other is extensive, and was further talked about in Backstage360’s conjoining interview.

Slim Man’s exquisite vocals, paired with Chase’s stupendous saxophone accompaniment, made for the most worthwhile entertainment. They performed a collection of jazz standards, including such beloved pieces like “Fly Me to the Moon,” and “Beyond the Sea.” Guests were treated to plentiful catering, and drinks prepared at the bar. Not even the chilling winter breeze could stifle the warmth to be found inside. It upheld a perpetually carefree, and blissful, atmosphere. One comparable to a family gathering, where conversation was rampant, laughter was shared aplenty, and guests were welcoming towards each other.

The lower floor of their residence is lined with posters, each of which belonging to the musicians that have passed through. Not only are said musicians prone to stopping by often, but the Melnyks consider them all a family unit. For them, the friendships they have built along the way make the process all the more special. Since the venue is their home, there is an instant sense of comfort when performing there. Whether someone be an audience member or musician, everyone comments on the intimacy provided.
