JinJer – “Sit Stay Roll Over”

Sumo Cyco

Tonight we all were in for a real treat with Jinjer, because the heavy metal band from the Ukraine was performing at the Diamond Ballroom in Oklahoma City and I was lucky enough to attend. The band was formed in 2009 and their style is in the death metal, progressive rock and nu metal area. The current band members are the beautiful Tatiana Shmailyuk ( vocals ), Roman Ibramkhalilov ( guitar ), Eugene Abdiukhanov ( bass guitar ), and Vladislav Ulasevich ( drums ).

The night started out like always, with some opening bands named Wood N Metal, Titan Metal, The Browning and as special guest band Sumo Cyco. Two out of those four opening bands really made an impression on me and I would like to talk a little more about them. The first one is Sumo Cyco. This Canadian punk rock and heavy metal based band was  formed in 2011. Their style really stood out to me this evening. I loved the energy they put out and absolutely loved their unique style. The singer Skye Alexandra Sweetnam also known as Sever reminded me of Gwen Stefani of No Doubt. Her Energy on stage, the way she dressed and interacted with the audience was just incredible. If Gwen would ever go in to heavy rock, I would like to say that this is exactly how she would be. The bands performance started out with “The Ugly” followed by “Undefeated” which has a very catchy chorus.

Next on the list was “Free Yourself”, “Sleep Tight” which went smoothly into a cover of System of a Down’s song “BYOB” followed by “Run With The Giants”.  Throughout her performance Skye went out into the audience and interacted with her fans. Then she went to the bar and ordered herself a drink. It was kind of funny when the bar tender asked her for her ID. That just showed that he was taking his job seriously and not making any exceptions. This band has such a unique style and every single song has something new and catchy that just grabs your attention. For tonight Sumo Cyco finished off their performance with “Love you Wrong” and “Move Mountains”. If you like unique and different, then you for sure want to check out this great band. They will leave a lasting impression and you will become a fan faster than you know. Right now Sumo Cyco is working on their 3rd album but they need everybody’s help. They created a crowd funding page and it would be super awesome if you could help and be part of it at http://sumocyco.com/album3/

Now the other opening band I would like to talk a little more about is The Browning. I personally hadn’t heard about them before but I instantly liked them. The Browning is a band from Kansas City Missouri, which was formed in 2005. Their style of music is a blending of metalcore with electric. The current band members are Jonny McBee (lead vocals), Cody Stewart (drums), Brian Moore (guitars, bass) and Collin Woroniak (bass, backing vocals, lead guitar).  I must say these guys are absolutely amazing. The way they mix the electronic part with the metal is perfect. The band put their own  signature on the music with special undertones of metal and rock mixed into the tracks. It’s just the right mixture between electronica/trance and metalcore/deathcore. The bands performance started out with their song “Beyond Stone”. I personally liked this song a lot because it made the beautiful vocals stand out on the softer parts. Next was “Final Breath” with a deep screaming, I want to say almost growling voice. This song was very catchy and got my fullest attention really quick. The band then continued with “Carnage”, “Pure Evil” and “Disconnect”. Every single song is just great and unique in its own way. They are so easy to listen to and I found myself wanting to hear more of them. The band finished up with “Sky Breaker” a softer song and one of my personal favorites and last but not least “Geist”.

The Browning Geist is the name of the new album released October of 2018. Make sure you check it out.

JinJer

Well now that I told you a little about Jinjer’s opening bands, it’s time to come to the main performance of the night. When my husband showed me a video of Jinjer on YouTube, my jaw literally dropped down to the ground. Tatiana, the singer of the band, has such a beautiful voice with her soft vocals but then unexpectedly switches over in to this deep growling. If I wouldn’t have seen it with my own eyes, I would have never in my life believed that this growling comes from such a sweet petite woman. That’s when it was clear to me, that I wanted to see her perform life. When the band made their appearance on stage the audience right away got a taste of the stunning growling voice with the song “Teacher, Teacher” and “Sit Stay Roll Over”. Tatiana has such a unique voice that I just can’t get over it. It’s like she shape shifts right in front of you. When she got to the song “Judgement & Punishment” I once again was pleasantly surprised. It has Reggae combined with metal and the way the band has done it, puts a nice twist on it. It’s very catchy and grabs your attention quickly.  Another song performed tonight, which I really liked was “Perennial”. It’s heavy but at the same time it shows Tatianas beautiful clean vocals. She has such control over her voice that it’s insane. “Bad Waters” is also a song where Tatiana shows everybody what a beautiful voice she has and that she doesn’t just know how to growl. Tonight’s show ended with one of my favorite songs of Jinjer. It’s the song called “Pisces” and she delivered it well. The show was a complete success and I can say we all were very well entertained with a growling that couldn’t have been better. If you ever get the chance to see Jinjer I just can highly recommend you go and do so. It is well worth it and you will be pleasantly surprised in the performance the band will deliver.
