Out & About – Aug

Hello out there!!

Breaking news: There is a drive-in movie and 2 live drive-in concerts at the Westfield North County Mall in Escondido, Aug. 14-16, details below under the Center for the Arts. Some restrictions apply.

More breaking news: SAN DIEGO BLUES FESTIVAL GOES VIRTUAL

Sept. 12, the 10th annual AimLoan.com San Diego Blues Festival will be on TV, radio and internet, more details below and full details coming Aug. 3 at www.sdbluesfest.com. This is an annual event to raise money for the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. This festival usually marks the end of summer for me every year, down on the bay…

The Happiness Course, otherwise known as Yale’s The Science of Well Being, is free www.coursera.org/learn/the-science-of-well-being

The most popular course in the more than three-century history of Yale, “The Science of Well Being” highlights research that reveals misconceptions about what makes us happy — and the concrete steps we can take to live a more fulfilling life. While this is the most popular Yale course, other free courses are available at www.coursera.org.

In addition, there are a number of free introductory courses on Open Yale Courses:

Both the Belly Up and The Coach House are livestreaming concerts:

Oct. 17, this site is hosting a World Concert

Here is a link for live webcams of deserted tourist hotspots around the world.  Listening to the water in a fountain in Rome is very cool as well as watching the surf hit the beach in Spain. At the bottom after the 10th webcam, there are a whole bunch more links to other things, including live concert streaming. Tons of options!

If you want to check out some photos and videos of flowers and birds in Oregon, the Marble Caves Distillery & Gardens Facebook page is great. Cathy grows the flowers and Rod makes brandies and rum. He grows the organic fruit he uses to make his yummy brandies. The irises are one of my favorites (she has about 50 varieties) but all the flowers are so beautiful, changing with the seasons!  I believe one can never have too many flowers… https://www.facebook.com/M.Cave.Distil/

I found this website that made me laugh really hard: www.boredpanda.com

(or maybe I just needed a serious release!)

While I work hard at being accurate, these are unusual times, so please always check before heading out somewhere.

The zoo and safari park are open with restrictions, as is the Midway. Disneyland is open with reduced attendance limits, other restrictions, and reservations are required. Their hotels are closed. There is al fresco dining pretty much everywhere. At the bottom after the local updates are listed, I have included virtual links for online activities. Some of them are repeats but they are still active. I know I haven’t found the time to check all of them out yet. At the very end, I included a bunch of funnies someone shared with me. We can never have too much laughter!

The 10th annual AimLoan.com San Diego Blues Festival is morphing into a virtual festival this year on Sept. 12 with a telethon on TV, radio and the internet to raise money for the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. This change was made in recognition that the annual bayside festival of 5,000 people was not appropriate during the Covid-19 crisis.

The festival features Tommy Castro & the Painkillers, Mr. Sipp—the Mississippi Blues Child, 2020 Grammy nominees Southern Avenue, Watermelon Slim and San Diego’s Whitney Shay.  The festival will air from 4 to 6 p.m. over KUSI TV and the internet.  iHeart Radio will also broadcast the event on yet-to-be determined stations.

There is no charge for the event, although online and telephone donations are encouraged for the Food Bank’s fight against hunger. More details coming Aug. 3 at www.sdbluesfest.com.

Please help them feed the hungry in our local communities, including the kids on the weekends and whenever school is out (like all the time now!). http://www.sandiegofoodbank.org/
